Districts that implement standards-based learning (SBL) or competency-based education (CBE) often have challenges with their technology. Their student information system (SIS) may not support SBL or CBE well. They may have trouble with their gradebook, parent portal, and/or report cards. Educators may struggle to implement SBL/CBE and lack good data to inform decisions.

Hear from Michelle Mager and Annette Burnette share how they have taken practical approaches to solving the standards-based learning challenges. Their school districts leveraged better technology infrastructure. Q&A will be available in the session.

Michelle Mager, the Curriculum Coordinator from Chicago Heights School District 170 in Illinois, was a current user of SchoolInsight SIS (aka TeacherEase) when she began her journey to SBL. Michelle will share how they rolled out by grade level adding learning targets, transitioning grading to rubric scores, and standards reporting including separating academic from conduct grades. Michelle will also share new grading policies that foster learning.

Dr. Annette Burnett, the Director of Teaching & Learning Data, Assessment and Highly Capable from Franklin Pierce School District in Tacoma, WA, has an SIS whose gradebook did not meet their SBL needs. With TeacherEase, they are able to keep their SIS and integrate a more SBL-focused gradebook, report card, and student/family portal. Annette will share how TeacherEase enhances a teacher’s ability to reflect, differentiate, and provide students opportunities. Mastery communication has also been improved with students and families. In addition, Franklin Pierce has leveraged TeacherEase reports to make instructional and program decisions.

Join us to hear how Chicago Heights SD 170 and Franklin Pierce SD leverage a solid technical foundation to make SBL practical.
